Conceptual framework

The KALEIDOS framework is designed to strengthen the connection between research and its societal and economic impact. At its core lies the concept of knowledge valorisation, understood as the process of transforming research results into practical applications, policies, and solutions that benefit society.

Making research impactful is closely linked to the principles of open science, that the project defines as a collaborative (inclusive, transdisciplinary and intersectoral) and impactful way of doing science with a systemic vision.

In that regard, a core element of the framework is its systemic perspective, based on collaboration across sectors. It follows a quadruple-helix approach, bringing together academia, industry, government, and civil society. These actors are actively involved throughout the process, contributing to the co-creation, exchange, and application of knowledge.

Operationally, the framework is structured as a challenge-driven process that spans the entire research lifecycle: It starts with the identification of societal challenges in collaboration with QH stakeholders and continues with co-creation processes involving multidisciplinary teams of researchers that find a solution for the proposed challenge.

To support this process, the framework is implemented through a set of enabling mechanisms. These include practical tools and methodologies, capacity-building activities for researchers and research managers, and the development of institutional strategies and action plans. It also promotes the use of indicators to measure impact and supports alignment with broader policy frameworks.

The overall objective of the KALEIDOS framework is to foster a shift in how research systems operate, moving to a more integrated approach centred on knowledge use and impact. In doing so, it supports institutional change, encourages collaboration across sectors, and contributes to the development of more responsive and inclusive innovation ecosystems.
